Chestnut · Pholiota adiposa

2 kg of fully colonised grain spawn on red sorghum, in a polypropylene autoclave patch bag. At our spawn rate of 10% of the wet substrate weight, one bag inoculates about 20 kg of prepared substrate.

Growing conditions

Also called cinnamon cap or fat Pholiota, and numerisugitake in Japan. Beautiful chestnut-brown caps, a mild nutty and peppery flavour, and a wonderful texture.

When it arrives

Use it as soon as you can. If you need to store it, keep it below 4 °C and never freeze it.

Lead time and delivery

We keep fridge stock of over 20 species, so most spawn orders leave within about a week. Stock goes first come, first served unless you have a production arrangement with us; if it has sold out, allow up to 2 weeks while the next batch incubates.

To keep spawn out of courier warehouses over weekends, we dispatch on Mondays and Tuesdays for regional deliveries, and up to Wednesday for Cape Town. Our standard courier (The Courier Guy, Economy) takes 2–3 days. These dispatch days don't apply to collections or to your own courier.

Step-by-step growing instructions are free in our Learning Centre. See how all our species compare on the fruiting temperature chart.
